Exclusivity and New iPhone (3G S) 2009

Monday, June 15, 2009

The exclusivity row over the new iPhone 3G S just don't seem to go away and the row has picked up steam after AT&T announced its new 2009 prices for the handset and the upgrade price. AT&T customers are saying that the carrier is now getting greedy, as the data plan package is also set to increase once the new iPhone 3G S is released on June 19.
I like so many other iPhone lovers cannot wait until the exclusivity agreement is over. AT&T's deal with Apple is due to end in 2010, we just hope that Apple sees sense and opens the iPhone up to other carriers.
Let's face it, this AT&T exclusivity deal is not good for Apple as it is dragging them down, this makes you wonder how involved AT&T are with the whole iPhone project. There could be another reason, I start to wonder if AT&T know that their exclusive deal is about to end, so they are looking to cash in before that happens.
It is not just AT&T who are being greedy and not thinking about its customers, the O2 network has the exclusivity deal with the iPhone in the UK, and they have also increased their prices. Having the iPhone on just one network does not seem like good business, as this limits the amount of network coverage on offer.
The problem you have with this is simple, you could be in the market for a new iPhone 3G S, but you know that the network that has the exclusive deal does not provide network coverage in the area you will use the Smartphone in the most. This has to have a huge effect on Apple profits, as the global market is in a downturn, surly Apple will do what it can to assure greater profits, and opening up the iPhone to other networks is the logical step.
