Get tickets to Phish at Fenway Park
TicketSnow.com already had a link posted for tickets to catch Phish at Fenway Park for the opener of their 2009 Summer Tour, although it was not displaying any for sale before the 10 a.m. on-sale time. Tickets already were listed for sale on StubHub, though, ranging from $113 to $3,400 per ticket. TicketLiquidator had tickets for sale before 10 a.m. with specific seat and row numbers attached to them, such as "Field Box 92, Row KK -- two seats available" for $194 apiece. VividSeats had specific tickets as well, like "Loge Box 14, Row JJ -- two tickets for $190 (each I believe, although it's not clear)." Likewise, you could buy four tickets at 7 a.m. EST (three hours before the general on sale time) in "Pavilion Box 6, Row B" for $203 each at CoastToCoastTickets.

An Introduction to Bidding and Buying on eBay.
So What is eBay?
eBay is an online auction website - and not just any auction site, but the biggest one in the world. If you know how an auction works, then you already know how roughly eBay works. Someone adds something they want to sell to the site, and then buyers come along and place bids on it. The highest bid wins the item! It's that simple.
eBay being an online auction makes a big difference, though. Buying and selling are not reserved for any elite. eBay accept almost any item, no matter how small, and will then advertise it on their sites all over the world. It's a powerful combination of an auction and a slightly chaotic marketplace.
What is Bidding?
Bidding is when you say how much you will pay for an item in an auction. Bidding on eBay, however, doesn't work in exactly the same way as a normal auction, at least in theory. On eBay, you tell the site what the maximum you are willing to pay for each item is, and then eBay places the bids on your behalf. That means you could say you were willing to pay up to $100 for something and only have to pay $50, if that was the highest maximum bid anyone else placed.
It's not as complicated as it sounds - the best way to get used to it is to give it a try. First, the best thing to do is to go to the eBay website designed for your country. If you don't know the address for it, just go to www.ebay.com and it will tell you there. Now, on the front page you should see a big box marked 'search': just type in anything that you'd like to buy there.
Wasn't that easy? Now you should have a list of items for sale in front of you, along with how much people are currently bidding for them and the time when bidding ends for each item. If you click one of these, you can read the description, and then - if you're happy with the item and happy to pay more than the current highest bidder is - you can bid!
How Do I Bid?
Go ahead and scroll down to the bottom of an item's description page, and type the maximum you are willing to pay (your maximum bid) into the box. Then simply press the 'place bid' button - you will need to sign in once you press the button, or go through a quick registration process if you don't have an eBay username).
If someone else's maximum bid on that item is higher than yours, then eBay will tell you and give you the opportunity to bid again. Otherwise, you're now the new highest bidder! All you need to do now is wait until the end of the auction - if someone else outbids you, then eBay will email you and you can bid again.
All sounds great, doesn't it? But by now you might be wondering whether a site as chaotic as eBay can really be all that safe to buy from. That's why the next email in this series will be about your rights when you buy from eBay.

New and used Asus eee PC 900 auctions - a Review
Among the main features of the Asus Eee PC 900 SSD memory are part of the latest technology developed for netbooks. It has a 16GB hard drive, the SSD memory storage of the sacrifices in exchange for the NETBOOK has much better performance. To compensate, we can buy portable hard drives or pen drives up to 32GB.
[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Asus eee PC 900"][/caption]
The battery of the Asus Eee Pc 900 is four cells, ensuring lasting between 2.5 and 4 hours. The processor used is Intel Celeron M 353 and Ethernet and WiFi connectivity b / g. The Asus Eee Pc 900 carries an integrated 1.3 megapixel web camera (in other netbooks is only or 3MP.), Microphone and speakers. Its screen is 8.9 "and weighs 0.99 kg, netbooks to be one of the lightest of the full range Eee Pc.
The Asus Eee Pc 900 with Linux or Windows XP as the Version. Linux is used by Asus is emerging as the big discovery for most users. As operating system for netbooks is the most recommended since it does not overload the processor and RAM, which is one of the major limitations of netbooks.
For anyone who hasn't heard of the Eee PC before (where have you been hiding?), let me give you the low down. The Eee PC is a very small machine measuring 225 x 165 x 35mm (WxDxH) and weighing around 1kg. that puts it well and truly into the ultra-portable sector, being lighter than even a Sony TZ31MN, and smaller too. This is a machine built to be used on the move, without the need to make much space for it in your bag. The Eee PC comes in two colours, pearlescent white, like the one I'm reviewing here and black - yes, that does sound very similar to Apple's MacBook range, but that's most definitely where the similarities end.
The full screen resolution is 1,024 x 600, which means you've got a widescreen aspect ratio, just like the majority of fully featured notebooks on the market. It should also be said that the quality of the screen in the Eee PC 900 is superb. OK, so it's not gloriously bright and vivid like the screen in a Sony TZ, but it is evenly lit, has a wide viewing angle and this sample at least, suffered from no dead pixels. The 8.9in screen actually fills the lid properly too, whereas the 7in display in the 701 just looked tiny, flanked as it was by speakers and surrounded by a large black bezel. As well as offering much improved functionality, the new screen also improves the Eee PC aesthetically.
Considering the overall size of the Eee PC, it comes as no surprise that the keyboard is quite small. Anyone who struggles with a reduced size keyboard on a traditional ultra-portable notebook isn't going to have much joy with an Eee PC, it really is that simple. However, if your hands aren't too big, you shouldn't have any problem typing - I'm currently writing this review on the Eee PC 900 and I can't say that I'm typing much slower than if I was using a full size keyboard on a notebook or desktop.
There are some big changes inside too, although the CPU isn't one of them. Despite the fact that many of us were hoping that the Eee PC 900 would be sporting Intel's new Atom chip, unfortunately it's not. In fact the basic platform is unchanged from the original model, with a 900MHz Intel Celeron processor residing in a 915GM based motherboard - hardly cutting edge, but more than capable of the job at hand. The first component improvement over the old 701 is the memory complement, with the new 900 sporting 1GB of RAM as standard, as opposed to the 512MB seen previously. The webcam has also been upgraded from a 0.3-megapixel unit to a 1.3-megapixel model - ideal for anyone who needs their friends to see them in even more detail while chatting on Skype.
Performance wise, the Eee PC 900 zips along, without any of the tedious grinding that Windows Vista users will be used to. Unlike with Vista, 1GB of RAM is more than enough for a well configured Linux build, while the fast solid state storage also helps to ensure that the Eee PC 900 responds instantaneously to your commands.
If there's one area where the new Eee PC 900 doesn't really improve on its predecessor, it's battery life, and that's a real shame. With the improvements that Asus has made in this new Eee PC model, battery life is about the only chink in its armour worth mentioning, but it's still a significant chink. Asus quotes 2.5-hours battery life for this machine, but I barely got two hours out of it, although to be fair I had the screen on full brightness and wireless running. Perhaps with a bit of a tweak to the brightness and more frugal use of wireless I could have matched Asus' estimate, but even then, two and a half hours isn't much by today's standards.
Asus has done a brilliant job of updating an already great product. The engineers have clearly listened to all the comments regarding the original Eee PC and attempted to put them right. The 1,024 wide screen makes the Eee PC 900 a joy to use, especially if you spend a lot of your time in a browser window. The extra memory and storage are also very welcome additions, and help make this version of the Eee PC a real alternative to a fully featured notebook.
Yes the price is higher than the previous model, but I personally believe that the Eee PC 900 still represents staggering value for money. Ultimately, if you want a notebook that's small, light and still very affordable, the Eee PC 900 should be top of your list.

Collecting Bulova Accutron watches
Buying and collecting Bulova Accutron watches - the world's first tuning fork watch. Created in the 1960's and 1970's, they are now highly prized world-wide by watch collectors.
While people think the tuning fork watch was a 20th century invention, the first prototype mechanical tuning fork clock, the "pendule ç diapason", was manufactured by Louis F. Breguet, grandson of the watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet. Breguet filed the patent on October 26, 1866, and March 1867. He also introduced a clock with a vibrating blade and mentioned a clock with 2 tuning forks and one with 2 vibrating blades. But the low frequency of the balance wheel made it impossible to improve on the accuracy of mechanical watches of the time, and the invention was ignored until the mid 20th century.
The "Bulova Accutron" has a frequency of 360 oscillations per second (360 Hz). The vibration of the tuning fork is controlled by a transistorized circuit. When the left magnet on the tuning fork moves to the right, the phase-sensing coil generates an induction voltage on the base of the transistor. The transistor "switches on" and becomes a conductor instead of a resistor. The electrical current is able to flow through the right circuit. The drive-coil becomes a magnet and gives an impulse to the permanent magnet. The movement of the permanent magnet in the driving-coil also causes an induction voltage opposing the power cell voltage. The result is a very small electric current and longer battery life. The problem ofturning the linear motion of the fork into a circular motion of the hands was solved by having the index jewel connected to the fork and pushing the ratchet wheel one tooth forward at a time. The pawl jewel is fixed to the watch frame and prevents the ratchet wheel from moving backwards. The ratchet wheel was an outstanding technical achievement - 2.4 mm in diameter, 0.04 mm thick with 300 teeth, each 1/100 mm high. In one year it revolves 38 million times. To protect this delicate ratchet system, the Accutron may be set only by turning the hands forward and to avoid damaging the delicate "fingers" that push it. Another technical achievement was the coil. The driving coil has 8,000 turns made of wire with a diameter of 0.015 mm and is an incredible 90 meters long.
However while Hetzel and Bulova were banking on the Accutron being the future of the watch, the majority of the watch industry was looking in a different direction - Quartz Technology. As the quartz movement gained popularity, it became cheaper to produce and equally as accurate as the Accutron. Accutron sales began to diminish. Soon, high end electronic watches like the Accutron virtually disappeared from the watch market - replaced with low end movements from Asia, mass produced for a fraction of what it cost to create an Accutron.
It wasn't long before collectors of early electronic horology began to seek out tuning fork watches. Their limited years of production and styles made them the ideal collectable. As demand for "hummers" went up, so did the prices.
The original Accutron was the 214. They are easy to distinguish because of the unique "backset" system. This means that the crown that sets the watch is on the back, not on the side like traditional watches. The 214 came in many models - from men's dress watches to railroad models. There are even a few 214 ladies' pendant watches and some of the earlier models featured asymmetrical designs that combined stainless steel with 14 k gold. However by far the most collectable 214's are the Spaceview and the Astronaut.
Should you add an Accutron to your watch and clock collection? Why not? Many people still routinely wear the Accutrons they bought back in the 60's and 70's and many others have joined them in proudly wearing these "hummers". They are very reliable, workhorse type watches and still maintain their reputation for accuracy and style. However, it should be noted that in the 1980's, Bulova began to run out of spare parts for Accutrons, and by the 90's, they stopped taking them in for repairs all together. Parts such as original coils and crystals are a commodity today. Coil problems are the most common cause of Accutron failure, and a coil repair job can be expensive.

Latisse - Generating longer eyelashes
Imagine your eyelashes growing dramatically longer. Latisse™ is a prescription medication that makes your very own lashes longer, thicker and fuller. Latisse™ is 0.03% Bimatoprost, which is the same active ingredient as Allergan's glaucoma medication, Lumigan™. Doctors found that one of the side effects of Lumigan™ was an increase in the darkness, thickness, length and number of eyelashes. Lumigan™, a prescription eye medication not a cosmetic, grew impressive eyelashes in men and women alike. Originally, Latisse™ was intended to be used in the treatment of hypotrichosis (the medical term for inadequate or insufficient eyelashes) in cancer patients that had lost their eyelashes while undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, but has now been approved by the FDA as an eyelash beautifier.
How do You Know if Latisse™ is Right for You?
The first step is to schedule a consultation with your eye doctor where they will evaluate your medical history and exam you to determine if you are a good candidate for Latisse™. It takes 8-16 weeks before the full effect of the medication is evident, therefore, if you want beautiful eyelashes before a big event, allow ample time. Often an increase in the number of eyelashes is noticeable in 4 weeks however, these will be short, new eyelashes needing time to grow. Have someone take pictures with your eyes closed, while looking slightly down to track your progress.
Latisse™ is applied once a day, in the evening, to the base of the upper eyelashes with a single use, sterile applicator. A new applicator is then used on the second eye. Repeating this daily will cause dramatically thicker, longer, darker and more numerous eyelashes. Take care in not allowing Latisse™ to be applied to areas other than the base of the eyelash margins, as repeated misapplication may cause unwanted hair growth. After 3 to 4 months you may be able to maintain your eyelashes while using the medication only 2-3 times per week.
Allergan states that 4% of the patients experienced minor itching or eye redness. Latisse™ should not be used if you are allergic to the any of its components, have an active infection or broken skin. Less common reactions are skin dryness, darkening or redness of the skin or ocular irritation. Your eye doctor will help monitor you and assist you with these minor side effects.

Collins America’s CinemaView vs. Apple’s Cinema Display
Collins America will start to ship its new lineup by September 1, and will be a fraction of the cost of the genuine Apple Cinema Display. So what is different about Collins America's range compared to offer alternatives on the market, well its CinemaView range is the first standalone monitors to look similar and have almost the same features as the Apple's Cinema Display product line.
According to Information Week, the Collins America’s CinemaView has a thin aluminum frame and glass screen and has rubberized composite rear housing, the rear housing of the Apple display is gray aluminum. Collins system is like the Apple system, where it uses a Mini DisplayPort connector.
The major difference between the two is the price, the 24-inch CinemaView costs $499; the same size Apple model costs $899. The 21-inch model will cost $399 while the 19-inch will sell for $299.

Your Rights as an eBay Buyer.
The Right to Receive Your Item.
Maybe the seller never sent the item, or maybe it got lost in the post. Whatever happened, you paid for the item. If it doesn't arrive in the post as described, you have the right to a replacement or a refund, whether it's the seller's fault or not.
The fact that you bought something on eBay doesn't mean that you don't have the exact same rights that you would have if you bought it in a shop (these rights are pretty much the same all over the world). Plus, under eBay's rules, the seller isn't allowed to change their mind about selling you the item: once the auction ends, it becomes a contract - you must buy and they must sell, or face eBay's penalties.
The Right for Your Item to Be as Described in the Auction.
Sometimes sellers don't wrap items properly, and so they get broken. Occasionally they write descriptions that are misleading or just plain wrong to begin with, leaving out vital details that would have caused you to change your mind about buying. If this happens to you, you again have the right to a replacement or a refund.
So How Do I Use My Rights?
First, you should take it up with the seller - most will be responsive, as do not want to have their reputation damaged when an upset buyer leaves negative feedback for all their future buyers to see. If that doesn't work, report them to eBay.
While eBay don't have many people handling complaints, they do have a relatively effective set of automatic process to handle common problems buyers and sellers have with one another.
Finally, if that doesn't work, then you should seek advice from consumer groups in your country, and as a last resort from the police. You should never have to get this far, though: problems on eBay that can't be resolved easily are extremely rare.
Don't Be Too Quick.
Remember not to get too annoyed and be unfair to the seller: nice sellers have agreed to give me refunds for undelivered items, only for me to find out a few weeks later that they were being held for me at the post office! Always try your best to communicate and think of everything that might have gone wrong: eBay works best when buyers and sellers sort out their problems together, instead of reporting each other to the authorities straight away.
More often that not receiving what they paid for, buyers have an altogether different problem: they knew what they were paying for, but didn't realise that what they were paying for was overpriced, low quality or a scam. The next email will give you a list of tips on how to avoid being ripped off on eBay.

New and used Nikon D3X auctions and review
Superficially, the new flagship is the D3's identical twin. The body, controls, user interface and also a large proportion of the camera's electronic and mechanical innards have been carried over directly from the D3. The camera's core component, however, is brand new. The 36 x 23.9 mm CMOS sensor provides a resolution of 24.5 megapixels, and while this is - compared to the D3 - a massive jump in resolution, D3X users have to accept a smaller range of sensitivity (ISO 100 to 1600, extendable to ISO 50 to 6400) and slower continuous shooting of five frames per second (7 fps in DX mode) in return.
While the only other piece of news - the 'Extra High' setting for Active D-Lighting - won't make much difference for most users, the premium that Nikon is charging for the extra resolution most certainly will. For $8000 retail price you can bag yourself almost two D3s. The D3X is also roughly $1500 more expensive than its only real competitor in terms of specification and features, the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III. This won't make the professionals who this cameras is targeted at contemplate changing systems, but can a camera be worth the equivalent amount of a small car? Read on and find out in our in-depth review of the Nikon D3X.
Nikon D3X Key Features
24.5 megapixel Full-Frame (36 x 24 mm) sensor

14-bit A/D conversion, 12 channel readout
Gapless micro lens array and on-chip noise reduction
Nikon EXPEED image processor (Capture NX processing and NR algorithms, optimized for D3X, lower power)
Super fast operation (power-up 12 ms, shutter lag 41 ms, black-out 74 ms)
Kevlar / carbon fibre composite shutter with 300,000 exposure durability
Multi-CAM3500FX Auto Focus sensor (51-point, 15 cross-type, more vertical coverage)

Also appearing in August are Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal onstage together, Elvis Costello, and actor David Hyde Pierce, who sings the classic songs of Cole Porter.
An assortment of other classical, jazz, rock and children's concerts are also on the docket throughout the year.
Audiences have been flocking to Ravinia since 1904, when the A.C. Frost Company opened an amusement park that hosted a steam calliope concert of "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home." But it wasn't too long before the New York Philharmonic made an appearance, and over the years, the venue has hosted everyone from George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein to Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa.

Why You Should Become an eBay Seller
Perhaps, the greatest reason as to why you should become an eBay seller is because there are no minimum auction requirements. For you, this means that you could just test the waters if you wanted to. If you were unsure as to whether or not you should rely on eBay to make money, you may want to sell a few items that you no longer need and see how it goes. Should you like the eBay selling experience, you could continue on. However, if you were not satisfied with the results, you could stop selling on eBay right away. eBay is flexible to all sellers, particularly those just getting started.
Another reason why you should become an eBay seller is because it is easy to do. eBay has a relatively easy learning curve. When listing an auction or selling an item on eBay, you are given step-by-step instructions on how you list your items and get your auctions up and running. As long as you follow the instructions provided to you by eBay, you could have your items listed online in a matter of minutes. It has been said that those with minimal computer experience are also able to sell on eBay, without any problems.
Speaking of the items that you want to sell on eBay, you will find that you can sell just about anything on eBay, within reason. There are only a few restrictions, which include inappropriate content and such. For a detailed list of prohibited eBay items, you will want to visit eBay's help center. Despite a few restrictions, there are a large number of items that can be sold on eBay. These items include real estate, vehicles, clothing, toys, movies, books, gaming consoles, computers, beauty items, and much more. Whether you are looking to sell something that you have in your home, something you bought from a yard sale or a thrift store, or something that can be dropped shipped from another company, you should be able to do so online with eBay.
The ability to make a profit is another one of the many reasons as to why you should become an eBay seller. What is nice about eBay is that they let you set your own price for your auctions. In fact, if you would rather outright sell your products, instead of selling them in a bidding auction, you can do so with "Buy It Now," listings. The ability to set your own prices is one the many reasons why you should check out eBay. Having the ability to set your own prices increases your chances of being able to make a profit on eBay.
If you would like to become an eBay seller, and as previously mentioned there are a number of reasons as to why you should, you will want to register for a free eBay account. Although your eBay account is free, it will cost a small amount of money to sell items on eBay. Your eBay selling fees will all depend on how much you list your items for, as well as how much they sell for. Despite having to pay small fees, eBay is more than worth your time. The least that you should do is give it a shot. As previously mentioned, if your eBay selling experience doesn't go as well as you had originally hoped for, you can stop and look for other online money making opportunities.

Product Description
With 10.1 megapixels, the stylish PENTAX Optio E60 offers digital users high-resolution images and easy-to-use features at a budget price. This member of the PENTAX Optio E series is equipped with an optical 3X zoom lens featuring a wide angle of view for group shots, landscapes and architecture. A popular green mode on the Optio E60 sets exposure, sensitivity and other parameters with a touch of a button for the digital users. A fine travel companion compatible with easy-to-find AA batteries and featuring world time and date imprint functions, the camera even offers an image recovery to retrieve accidentally-erased, once-in-a-lifetime pics.
The downsides of the Pentax Optio E60 10MP Digital Camera are considerable beyond just the lack of photo quality as compared to it's peers in the marketplace. The LCD screen is small. The user interface is plain and dated looking. The lack of onboard memory demands the purchase of an SD card to make the camera useable. And, lastly, the lack of rechargeable batteries means that you'll have to stay well stocked on AA batteries in order to avoid missing shots. I found the battery life to be quite short.
The bottom line is that the Pentax Optio E60 10MP Digital Camera is rather dated in comparison to other brands and even other Pentax models. It's no wonder that they're blowing this camera out on the closeout circuit, they want it out of their warehouse to make room for a decent inexpensive camera.

Sprint Palm Pre launch date May 17, June 29: which is it?
Phonenews reports that Sprint have two launch windows for the Palm Pre smartphone, the first being May 17 and the second June 29. The question is which date are we likely to see the official launch of the Palm Pre?
May 17 is the preferred launch date, but that all depends if Sprint receive enough stock of the Palm Pre. If they do not, then Sprint will put back the launch until June 29. This is all speculation of course and we will just have to wait to hear from Sprint officially, hopefully that will be soon.

When to "Buy Now" and When to Bid.
Buy it Now.
- The Advantages.
When you use Buy it Now, you know the asking price and you can take some time to decide whether to pay it or not - you can even negotiate. You don't need to keeping your eye on the auction, or get caught up in the last-minute bidding frenzy that is now inevitable on any popular item. Not only that, but the seller will be happy to get a fixed price for their item, and they're likely to nicer to you than usual. Some sellers can be a little resentful when they feel that you got a little too much of a bargain on their item.
- The Disadvantages.
You will almost certainly pay more for the item, especially with more expensive items. Also, it takes some of the fun out of eBay. Aren't you there for an auction, after all? If you want to pay a fixed price then there are thousands of online stores you could be visiting. It's like pressing 'collect' instead of 'gamble' on a fruit machine: it's the boring option. But then, maybe that's what you want.
These rules are relatively constant: there are few times when using Buy it Now would allow you to get something cheaper, or when bidding would be an easier way to do it. In the end, as with so many things in life, it's a simple question of price vs. convenience, and it's up to you.
There are those times, though, when the strategic use of the Buy it Now button can be a useful tool to help you outwit your competition. If the current bid is almost as high as the Buy it Now price, then why bid higher and keep the contest going? Clicking that button is a no-brainer. The same goes for times when a seller has, for some reason, set the Buy it Now price only slightly higher than their starting price for bids. Why bother to go through all the hassle of bidding?
You might also find that there are times when you should leave the Buy it Now button as a last resort: it can be a useful way of ending last-minute contests with a decisive 'this is mine' gesture.
In fact, there are all sorts of tricks you can use on eBay, if you want to get ahead of the game. Remember that most buyers on eBay are casual, and don't know what they're doing: a little knowledge can go a long way in getting you an advantage. Our next email will have a few tips and tricks for you.

Microdermabrasion explained
Microdermabrasion is a mini procedure that involves the skin being "sandblasted" by aluminum oxide crystals, baking soda, salt or corn cob granules to remove the stratum corneum (top) layer of the skin; dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion also promotes the production of new cells in the basal (deepest) layer of the dermis. This procedure may not give everyone the same results but if you have the money it is a nice treat and requires no down time. It can clean your pores incredibly and hinder any future breaks outs if used on a regular basis. Microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen net working to further even out skin texture and appearance.
Microdermabrasion exfoliates your skin to stimulate cell turnover, improve skin tone, and to soften and polish away mild sun damage, scars, and facial wrinkles.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion
The effects of microdermabrasion are directly influenced by the skill of the practitioner. Microdermabrasion is an important method of reducing skin impurities, clogged pores, oily skin, and resurfacing superficial skin irregularities.
Are You a Candidate For Microdermabrasion?
The best candidates for microdermabrasion are individuals with acne prone and blotchy skin, small scars, rhytides, keratoses, large pores, milia, or sebaceous hyperplasia. If you have sun damage or uneven texture and would like to improve the condition of your skin, you may be a good candidate for Microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion is not recommended for those who have active keloids, undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, active, weeping acne (stages 3 to 4), active rosacea, unstable diabetes or auto-immune system disorders.
Does Microdermabrasion Hurt?
Microdermabrasion does not hurt although it may sting a little around the eye area. The patient normally works up to a level as they go to increase the penetration to the skin. Your skin may feel a little hot and appear a little pink for the first day.
You should be perfectly fine that night. Although really intense micro- dermabrasion treatments may leave you pink for several days. The technician can turn down the controls if the suction or level of the blast is too strong for you.
What to Expect During a Treatment?
Patients have attributed the sensation of a microdermabrasion treatment to a slight windburn. Although depending upon the level that you wish to reach the discomfort is usually quite minimal, if at all. The treatments typically last 20 to 30 minutes for the face, if your treatment includes the neck and upper chest area, it may last up to an hour.
A normal course of microdermabrasion treatments varies between 4 to 8 at approximately 2 week intervals. It is recommended that you schedule an additional treatment every 1 to 3 months to maintain your skin in excellent condition. Most patients actually feel and see a difference just after one or two treatments but schedule additional treatments to increase this improvement.
Disadvantages of Microdermabrasion
The disadvantage of microdermabrasion is that there is limited control in the depth of penetration. It is possible to get broken capillaries and pitting of the skin with microdermabrasion, and microdermabrasion is not appropriate for patients with pigmented skin. The crystals used in microdermabrasion can interfere with good visualization of the appropriate target areas in the skin.
Microdermabrasion Methods:
There are several methods of microdermabrasion available on the market. These include:
Crystal-based
Crystal-free
Vibrating paddle systems
Each method has its pros and cons, but all of them help to exfoliate or remove the top layer of the epidermis by a physical method.
Microdermabrasion is a great, affordable way to reduce the appearance of fine lines, superficial brown spots, acne, and minimize pore size with little down time. I like to follow my treatments with a facial, as it helps the cosmeceuticals penetrate deeper. You should select the method based on your provider's expertise and results they achieve (check out their before and after photos).
Crystal-based systems are the ones we are most familiar with, as they have been around the longest. These machines use a vacuum to move the crystals from the machine to the handpiece to make contact with your skin. The crystals hit the skin, removing the top layer, and are removed quickly by the vacuum in the machine, along with this dead skin layer. This is like water in a steam cleaner that shoots down to the carpet and gets sucked up by the machine along with the dirt. The faster the pass over the skin, the more superficial the abrasion.
The crystals used in these machines include corundum, which is aluminum oxide, a colorless saffire. This is inert, and since the crystals do not penetrate deeply, they do not really have a danger of becoming embedded in the skin. Other crystals, such as sodium bicarbonate, must be specially formed to have the angles to abrade the skin. Sometimes the sodium bicarbonate is helpful in changing the pH or acidity of the skin for acne treatments. If your physician has a good machine, there should be an aspiration mode that helps to remove any residual crystals, so you don't feel grainy after the treatment. These machines, if made correctly, do all of the work, and do not rely as much on the skill of the operator. So, someone with a "heavy hand" would not necessarily give a deeper treatment unless they set the machine at a higher setting.
Crystal-free handsets operate similarly to the crystal-based machines, except the skin is pulled up into the handset where there is a small plate covered with abrasive material that removes the top layer of skin. This is a bit like using sandpaper to abrade the skin. Some machines have this plate closer to the surface, so that someone with a heavier hand could do a deeper abrasion than someone else. Sometimes even the same person is inconsistent with her/his pressure. Many people prefer this method because they don't want the grainy feeling after treatment, but it is more operator-dependent.
The crystal-based and crystal-free handsets that are powered by a vacuum pressure are also beneficial in bringing fibroblasts (cells that create collagen) to the surface to help fill in the wrinkles from underneath. This effect is evident 2 weeks after the treatment, so you walk out with glowing skin and still look good afterwards.
The vibrating paddle machines (Vibraderm, Multiderm) use a similar surface, but in a larger paddle that vibrates and removes the skin cells that way. This does leave dead skin particles (and viral particles) around to possibly be inhaled. The advantage of this system is that large areas (calluses, arms) can be treated in less. The paddles are not disposable and are usually reused after being sterilized.
There is also a system that utilizes the crystal-free handset but also "infuses" the skin with vitamins, antioxidants, and other "therapeutic ingredients." Keep in mind that the skin functions as a barrier, and treating the skin with a microdermabrasion does not necessarily make it more porous. I have not seen many studies that prove that these ingredients actually penetrate to do much good after the treatment is complete.
I prefer the crystal-based system because it does great exfoliation, creates collagen under the wrinkles, and is an affordable way with little down-time to get glowing skin. The results are best with multiple treatments done in a row before a big event. Then, maintenance treatments afterwards help the skin to turnover faster and lets those baby cells come to the surface faster.
There is a mild redness that lasts a couple of hours after the procedure. Because of the vacuum pressure, it is not recommended for people with rosacea. These treatments can be done as often as every 10 days. It's a great way to get a feel for aesthetic treatments.
