Latisse - Generating longer eyelashes

Friday, April 17, 2009

Latisse is a drug applied to the base of eyelashes to generate longer lashes. Latisse keeps hairs in their growth phase, producing longer, darker and thicker eyelashes. The effects of Latisse are not permanent. Lashes return to normal after the patient stops using Latisse. Latisse is a lower concentration of the drug Lumigan.

Imagine your eyelashes growing dramatically longer. Latisse™ is a prescription medication that makes your very own lashes longer, thicker and fuller. Latisse™ is 0.03% Bimatoprost, which is the same active ingredient as Allergan's glaucoma medication, Lumigan™. Doctors found that one of the side effects of Lumigan™ was an increase in the darkness, thickness, length and number of eyelashes. Lumigan™, a prescription eye medication not a cosmetic, grew impressive eyelashes in men and women alike. Originally, Latisse™ was intended to be used in the treatment of hypotrichosis (the medical term for inadequate or insufficient eyelashes) in cancer patients that had lost their eyelashes while undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, but has now been approved by the FDA as an eyelash beautifier.

How do You Know if Latisse™ is Right for You?

The first step is to schedule a consultation with your eye doctor where they will evaluate your medical history and exam you to determine if you are a good candidate for Latisse™. It takes 8-16 weeks before the full effect of the medication is evident, therefore, if you want beautiful eyelashes before a big event, allow ample time. Often an increase in the number of eyelashes is noticeable in 4 weeks however, these will be short, new eyelashes needing time to grow. Have someone take pictures with your eyes closed, while looking slightly down to track your progress.

Latisse™ is applied once a day, in the evening, to the base of the upper eyelashes with a single use, sterile applicator. A new applicator is then used on the second eye. Repeating this daily will cause dramatically thicker, longer, darker and more numerous eyelashes. Take care in not allowing Latisse™ to be applied to areas other than the base of the eyelash margins, as repeated misapplication may cause unwanted hair growth. After 3 to 4 months you may be able to maintain your eyelashes while using the medication only 2-3 times per week.

Allergan states that 4% of the patients experienced minor itching or eye redness. Latisse™ should not be used if you are allergic to the any of its components, have an active infection or broken skin. Less common reactions are skin dryness, darkening or redness of the skin or ocular irritation. Your eye doctor will help monitor you and assist you with these minor side effects.
