Ravinia tickets - Bid or Buy now !

Thursday, April 16, 2009

It may still be April, but a good time to start making your summer plans, because tickets to the 2009 Ravinia Festival season are now on sale.

Tickets for the celebrated North Shore concert venue went on sale earlier Thursday. The season officially kicks off on June 5, when George Hearn, Sylvia McNair and Rod Gilfry star in a production of "Camelot."

Afterward, each month is packed from A-listers from the world of music past and present. As he does each year, Garrison Keillor will broadcast his "Prairie Home Companion" radio show live from the Ravinia stage, and Portland-based "little orchestra" Pink Martini will be joined onstage by Michael Feinstein. The Indigo Girls and Joe Cocker also are set for June appearances.

In July, Ravinia will host Tom Jones, John Legend, Lyle Lovett piano selections by Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang, and Jackson Browne.

In August, Ravinia hosts Peter, Paul and Mary, children's folk music legend Ella Jenkins, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Pat Benatar with Debbie Harry and Blondie, the great Tony Bennett, and for two days at the end of the month, Carrie Underwood. Also appearing in August are Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal onstage together, Elvis Costello, and actor David Hyde Pierce, who sings the classic songs of Cole Porter.

An assortment of other classical, jazz, rock and children's concerts are also on the docket throughout the year.

Audiences have been flocking to Ravinia since 1904, when the A.C. Frost Company opened an amusement park that hosted a steam calliope concert of "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home." But it wasn't too long before the New York Philharmonic made an appearance, and over the years, the venue has hosted everyone from George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein to Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa.
